Sierra Nevada Region Soroptimist represent over 1800 members in 53 clubs located from Sacramento north to Yreka and all of the state of Nevada. (If you are from outside this area we can put you in touch with Soroptimists in your area.) Through Soroptimist International we join nearly 75,000 members in 132 countries as "A Global Voice for Women." Together we make a difference through Awareness, Advocacy and Action. We work together for the betterment of our communities and our world with a major focus on issues affecting women and children.

National News: Soroptimist International of the Americas

The first Soroptimist club was formed in 1921 by a group of 80 women in Oakland, Alameda County, California. Now known as Soroptimist of the Americas, the organization is part of Soroptimist International, with over 100,000 members in 119 countries. They chose their name from two Latin words meaning "best for women" which not only describes our organization's qualities but also our members' missions to:

  • Contribute to international understanding and universal friendship.

  • Maintain high ethical standards in business and professional life,

  • Strive for human rights for all people and, in particular, to advance the status of women,

  • Develop a spirit of friendship and unity among Soroptimists of all countries,

  • Develop interest in community, national, and international affairs, and

  • Contribute to international understanding and universal friendship.
